Biotecnika: An E-Learning and E-Commerce Platform for Life Sciences

Most education platforms sell a course and then deliver it. Biotecnika does something harder: it is an e-learning platform, an e-commerce platform and a Biotech Infopedia simultaneously — a comprehensive online resource for biotechnology students, serving life sciences students and researchers globally through both web and mobile.

Those three things pull in different directions, and reconciling them is the engineering story.

The Challenge

A learner arriving at Biotecnika might be looking for a paid certification course, a free reference article, an exam preparation resource or a product. Frequently they do not know which, and the path between them is not linear — someone reads a reference article, discovers a gap, and becomes a course customer.

Building this as separate systems is the obvious approach and it breaks the thing that makes the platform work:

  • Catalogue and content are the same discovery surface. A student searching a topic should find the reference material and the course, ranked sensibly against each other.
  • Entitlement is continuous, not binary. A user is simultaneously a free reader, a purchaser of one course, and a prospect for another. The interface has to reflect all three at once.
  • Life sciences is a global, price-sensitive student audience, which puts weight on mobile performance and on payment paths that work outside a single market.
  • Reference content is the acquisition channel. Anything that degrades its accessibility degrades the commercial side too.

What We Built

A combined e-learning and e-commerce platform delivered as a website and mobile application.

Unified catalogue and content. Courses, resources and reference material share a discovery layer, so a search returns the useful thing regardless of whether it is free reading or a paid product.

Course delivery and progression. The learning half — enrolment, structured progression, assessment — held in the same system as the purchase, so buying a course and starting it is one continuous act rather than a handoff between products.

Commerce. Storefront, cart, checkout and entitlement, built to hold a user with a mixed history of free and paid access without treating them as two accounts.

The Infopedia. A structured reference library for biotechnology, which is the reason a large share of the audience arrives at all, and which had to remain fast and open rather than being gradually walled off.

Mobile applications for students who study on a phone, which in this audience is most of them.

The Approach

The decision that shaped the build was treating commerce and learning as one system rather than integrating two. A shop attached to a course platform produces the familiar seams — an order that exists in one place and an enrolment in another, a support burden every time they disagree, and a discovery experience that cannot rank a free article against a paid course because it does not know about both.

The second decision was to protect the free reference layer. There is a standing commercial temptation to gate valuable reference content, and in a platform whose audience arrives through that content it is usually a mistake. Keeping the Infopedia genuinely open is what keeps the top of the funnel wide.

The Result

Biotecnika operates as a prominent platform in biosciences education, offering courses and services to students and professionals globally — an e-learning platform, e-commerce storefront and Biotech Infopedia in a single product, available on web and mobile.
