Simplifying the Smart Home. A leading company in the smart home domain had developed smart sensors for consumers. They now wanted to build a mobile app solution that would enable their consumers to connect the smart sensors to the user’s home Wi-Fi and provide alerts to the users in the form of push notifications whenever an event like a water leak or if a smoke alarm went off. The app would also let users customize the smart sensors’ features. The contemporary world is adopting the latest technologies at an alarming rate. The latest technology that has captured the attention of the world is the IoT or the Internet of Things. The IoT is a network of devices that are connected to the internet. These devices range from smart appliances in your kitchen to cars that are connected to the internet. The IoT has revolutionized many industries and the smart home mobile app is no different. It offers a user-friendly interface and allows you to manage your smart home devices from anywhere. It provides real-time updates on the status of your smart home devices and lets you control them using voice commands. iLeaf Solutions was chosen by our client to build a highly secure and optimized mobile app solution that would ensure smooth on-boarding and effortless connection of the smart sensors to the user’s WiFi and it also alerts the users

The Challenge

Our app development team successfully tackled several intriguing challenges throughout the development and support of our system. We overcame Wi-Fi provisioning and connectivity issues by integrating SoftAp and Sound provisioning methods into our mobile app, ensuring seamless connection between smart sensors and users' home Wi-Fi. Additionally, we prioritized the security of our mobile app and cloud, conducting thorough penetration tests and addressing any identified vulnerabilities. As our customer base and white-labeled versions grew, we focused on scalability and opted to migrate data for approximately 30,000 users to a different cloud provider. This data migration process proved to be an exciting challenge that our skilled development team effectively managed.

We utilized React Native as our chosen development platform for creating this application. To overcome the challenges we encountered, our team devised effective solutions through careful ideation. For Wi-Fi provisioning, we implemented native code separately for iOS and Android platforms, resolving compatibility issues. We prioritized data encryption and cloud security by encrypting app data using AES encryption, updating third-party libraries, implementing certificate pinning, and enabling HTTPS communication for secure data transfer. Root and Jailbreak detection were also enabled to enhance device security. On the cloud side, we utilized JWT authentication and implemented strict access rules to ensure data privacy. Additionally, we developed a migration API to seamlessly transfer user data from the old cloud provider to the new platform, addressing scalability concerns. Thorough testing, both automated and manual, was conducted during beta versions of operating systems to address connectivity issues.

Our technology stack included React Native, VSCode, Google Cloud Platform, NodeJS, Xcode, Android Studio, and Sourcetree.

Our consumer-focused app featured a user-friendly and intuitive UI, ensuring seamless onboarding and hassle-free WiFi connection for smart sensors. With dedicated efforts over a span of 6 months, we successfully developed a highly secure smart home mobile app. Additionally, we achieved a successful migration of all users, further enhancing the overall user experience.
